ABSTRACT

Although the term abstract can be attributed to art throughout its history, it is specifically applied to
ABSTRACT
an artistic style that began among avant-garde movements in Europe and the USA in the early 20th century. Such movements rejected recognizable styles of representation, and instead chose either to reduce subjects to simplified forms, as exemplied by the sculpture of Brancusi or Henry Moore, or to create work without a physical subject in the real world, as evident in works by Kandinsky, and Mondrian after 1917.
